Cheriyal Paintings – Made on Canvas scrolls, made from khadi, Cheriyal Paintings are hand-painted in a style unique to the region’s local motifs and iconography. Characterized by a dominance of the color red in the background, these brilliantly hued Cheriyal paintings received Geographical Indication Status in 2007. Cheriyal masks and dolls are modeled along the same theme of ancient Indian mythology and local folklore.
Cheriyal painting must have been popular across Telangana in earlier times, though with the advent of television, cinemas and computers it has been fenced into its last outpost, the Cheriyal town where a few artists like Sai Kiran Verma are still keeping the tradition going on.
