In March 2020, the first COVID case was detected in Bhilwara and the immediate world changed dramatically. The scenes and the experience — of educational institutions, markets, eateries, everything, closing down and of people disappearing from the busy streets — inspired a visual story in Kalyan Joshi’s mind. A veteran artist is using traditional Phad paintings to raise awareness on COVID-19 in Rajasthan. Through their arts, folk artists produced many artworks, which conveyed the importance of social distance, wearing facemasks, washing hands with soap and avoiding group travel.
Created by one of the master artists of ‘Phad’ Art form, Kalyan Joshi, who started working with his father and Guru Shri Shrilal Joshi at the young age of eight years. The Joshi family has been the traditional artists of Phad for many centuries now. Kalyan Joshi has given new dimensions to Phad painting with his monochromatic renditions, collaborations with narrative poetry and more. He received the prestigious National Award in 2012. He is also the founder of “ANKAN ” Kala Sansthan, which served thousands of children with phad paintings.
These paintings are handmade in Phad style with natural pigment colors on paper. The perfect thing to decorate puja rooms in homes, offices, and business places.
The artwork is original with the signature done by the artist and delivered directly from the artist’s gallery to the hands of the buyer.
