This intricate Phad Painting depicts a Royal couple in celebration, and is created by a renowned ‘Phad’ artist Kalyan Joshi. ‘Royal couple’ is sitting together in a natural and romantic setting. A maidservant flanks them, who could also be their entertainer, singer, dancer, or attendant. In the background we can see a lush tree with new leaves. The entire painting is done on a maroon color background using white, and black colors with fine Golden lines.
Created by one of the master artists of ‘Phad’ Art form, Kalyan Joshi, who started working with his father and Guru Shri Shrilal Joshi at the young age of eight years. The Joshi family has been the traditional artists of Phad for many centuries now. Kalyan Joshi has given new dimensions to Phad painting with his monochromatic renditions, collaborations with narrative poetry and more. He received the prestigious National Award in 2012. He is also the founder of “ANKAN ” Kala Sansthan, which served thousands of children with phad paintings.
The large-scale horizontal paintings on cloth portraying the epic lives of the local hero-gods are popularly known as Phad paintings. These paintings have the mammoth task of representing a complex and full-blown folk epic narrative, which it achieves through a very specific style of representation. Filled with figures and pictorial incidents, these paintings form a kind of dramatic backdrop to epic storytelling performances. Since they depict the different episodes, these paintings are customarily opened or unrolled only after sundown, in conjunction with the all-night performance. This could be one reason for these paintings to be called Phad, possibly derived from the Sanskrit word ‘patt’.
