One of the self-taught Artists of Pichwai, Narendra or Nemichand as he is Popularly known among art lovers, has carved out a place for himself with the sheer Brilliance and diversity in his Paintings.
A genius of his art, Nemichand has introduced hundreds of new designs and styles to stretch the scope of Pichwai Art, and through this has brought attention and a buzz around the Art form, across the art world. He started his artistic journey early as eleven years old, when he tried his hands at various art forms, before settling for Pichwai.
Pichwai art came into existence in 17th Century as a temple art form where the detailed painting of the deity ‘Srinath Ji’ a form of Lord Krishna, was supposedly used as a decoration behind the Deity. As per some other sources, it was later used for worshiping while hiding the original statue behind it, in order to save the statues from getting destruction by Mughal invaders. Hence the Name ‘Pichwai’ came into existence, literally meaning painting with something behind it.
